In recognition of Black Heritage Month: A Cultural Celebration

Black Ballerina Performs

Entertainment has long been the leading source of getting through one day to get to the next. The arts are the muse of life.

Whether performing on Broadway: Lorraine Hansberry, Jennifer Holliday; the playwrights: August Wilson, Ntozake Shange; our filmmakers: Spike Lee, Ava DuVernay; the films: The Color Purple, Baadasssss!, Eve's Bayou; the visual arts: Harriet Powers' Bible quilt, Ealy Mays' Last Train to Chihuahua.

From great musicians: Michael Jackson, Nadira Norjahan; the choreographers and dancers: Philadanco, Fist and Heel Performance Group; entertaining us in sports: Muhammad Ali, Gabrielle Douglas, Mo'ne Davis; the books and authors: Americanah, Alex Haley.

To the chancels that hosts these great cultural works: Anacostia Museum, the Scribe Video Center, we honor creators and visionaries, unsung and sung, who have influenced and continue to inspire and add rich context to the arts.
